About the CMA Awards
The Country Music Association (CMA) Awards are a cornerstone event in the music industry, celebrating the best in country music. Established in 1958, the CMA was the first organization dedicated to promoting a specific genre of music. Since its inception, over 6,000 industry professionals have participated in determining the nominees and winners each year.
The first CMA Awards Banquet and Show took place in 1967, and by 1968, the event was broadcast nationwide on NBC, becoming the longest-running annual music awards show on network television. Since 2006, the CMA Awards have found their home on ABC, where they continue to captivate audiences across the nation.
The CMA Awards Trophy
The CMA Awards trophy, first designed in 1967 by artist Frank Waggoner, reflects the spirit and legacy of country music. Originally made from rich walnut wood and mounted on a sturdy marble base, it symbolized the strength and warmth of the genre. The center featured a brass music note with the slogan "Best Liked Worldwide," CMA’s motto at the time.
In 1983, due to the limited availability of walnut, the trophy transitioned to hand-blown crystal, a material still in use today. The 15-inch, 6-pound trophy is crafted in Florence, Italy, with final assembly completed in Nashville, Tennessee. The polished bronze medallion in its center features the CMA logo, surrounded by musical notes from the hymn "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." After the live broadcast, winners' names, the award year, and category are engraved onto each trophy.
Balloting and Voting Process
The CMA Awards are determined by the votes of CMA members, a group of music professionals including artists, executives, publicists, songwriters, and others from around the globe. Like the Oscars and Grammys, the CMA Awards honor nominees and winners selected by their industry peers.
Rules and procedures for voting are established by the CMA Board of Directors. Eligible singles, albums, music videos, and other products must have been released or gained national prominence during the eligibility period. For the 2024 awards, this period runs from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024.
